Common Mistakes in Small-Space Layouts

Blocking the door swing

Most doors swing inward about 3 feet. If you place a dresser or bookshelf in that arc, the door will not open fully. Always leave clearance on the hinge side and at least 32 inches of clear width for the door itself.

Walkways narrower than 30 inches

The sketchpad flags anything under 30 inches. That is the minimum for comfortable passage. If you have kids, pets, or plan to move large items through the space, aim for 36 inches or more in main pathways.

Rugs that are too big

A rug that extends under all furniture legs makes a room look larger. But in a small space, a rug that is too big creates a tripping hazard at the edges. Leave 18 to 24 inches of floor visible between the rug and the wall.

Ignoring HVAC vents

Placing a couch or wardrobe over a floor vent blocks airflow and can cause heating or cooling problems. Check your vent locations before committing to a layout.

Pushing everything against walls

It feels natural to line furniture along every wall, but floating a sofa or desk a few feet away can actually open up the center of the room and make it feel less cramped.

Forgetting about outlets

You will need to charge devices and plug in lamps. Make sure at least one outlet is accessible from your planned furniture positions. Extension cords across walkways are a tripping risk.

Why This Sketchpad Exists

Moving into a new apartment is exciting until you realize your old couch does not fit through the doorway, or your new bed blocks the closet. This sketchpad was built to help renters and apartment dwellers plan ahead without downloading heavy software or learning a complex 3D tool.

The furniture dimensions here reflect common models from stores like IKEA, Target, and Wayfair. They are realistic averages, not exact specs for any single product. Always measure your actual furniture before making a purchase decision.
